The Sweetest Day | Celebrating Rosh Hashanah
This week we celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year!
As a gal who's pretty lax in the religion department, this wasn't a holiday I had grown up celebrating.
So, with the help of some of our more experienced teammates we put together a mini-feast for the occasion!
The Circle
While I was already well acquainted with the traditional Jewish bread, challah, which is made with an egg-rich dough and is braided usually in a rectangular shape before baking, I had never before seen it in the round! For Rosh Hashanah the challah is made in a circular shape, to symbolize the cycle of the year, and is sometimes made with raisins. We grabbed one of these luxurious loafs from our local bakery and it did not disappoint! (Pro tip: make french toast out of the next-day leftovers!)
The Sweetness
A well-known New Year's tradition is to dip apples with honey which symbolizes a sweet a fruitful year ahead. We gathered up a smattering of local, heirloom apples and some whipped honey and started dippin! Normally, I'd say this combo would be a touch too sweet for my savory preferences, but I was pleasantly surprised! The crunchy, fresh apples paired with the sweet honey was a welcome treat. (Pro tip #2: Buy yourself a sweet little honey dripper! Mine cost only $2.50 and it was extremely satisfying to use!)
The Table!
Finally, my favorite part: setting the whole smorgasbord out on the table! Keeping with our fruit theme, I started our table out with the Pear Tablecloth. This is a great place to start because it is a minimal print with lots of white. This allows more room for mixing and matching your napkins, plates, and serveware. From here we placed our food on alternating blue and yellow ceramic plates and layered in various striped napkins in shades of yellow, orange, blue, and white. It made for a tablescape that is at once put-together and eclectic. I love this look for mini-meals, grazing tables, or hors devours tables, when meals are less formal and more fun!
